Mariah included a cover of the Christmas classic “Silent Night” on her Merry Christmas album, released in 1994. “‘Silent Night’ was one of my favorite Christmas carols growing up and, when I thought of making a Christmas album, I said I'd never do ‘Silent Night’ because everybody's done it and you can't really top everybody's image of that song,” Mariah explained in 1994. “But I went out to dinner with my backup singers one night. We went to a restaurant and there was a guy playing piano and they started doing kind of this Gospel-y rendition of the song and it was really cool and different. It still has the traditional element of the song, but adding that Gospel twist to it really made it interesting for me, so I decided to do it.”
