Merry Christmas

Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas album was released on November 1, 1994, and entered the Billboard 200 chart at number thirty, reaching its peak of number three on December 17. In the United States, The album was certified 9x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on December 8, 2023. Merry Christmas became Mariah's first number-one album in Japan, where it spent three non-consecutive weeks atop the Oricon Albums Chart and ended 1994 as the best-selling foreign album of the year. Merry Christmas isn't only one of Mariah's most successful albums, it is the best-selling Christmas album of all time, with sales of over 15 million copies worldwide.

When Sony Music pitched the idea of releasing a Christmas album, Mariah was hesitant at first, as she had only released three studio albums. “It was so early in my career. I didn't feel — from a strategic point of view — that it was time to do something like that,” Mariah explained in 2019. “As much as I love Christmas, I thought that the record company was off. Obviously, I couldn't have been more wrong.”

Mariah wrote three new original songs for the album: “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” “Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)” and “Jesus Born On This Day.” “It comes from a totally different state of mind than when you are recording your own studio album,” Mariah said. “The writing and the actual recording of the new Christmas songs was really an interesting experience, because you are coming from a totally different perspective. It was definitely a priority for me to write at least a few new songs. But for the most part, people really want to hear the standards at Christmas, no matter how good a new song is.”

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” was released as an airplay-only single in the United States on November 14, 1994. At the time, Billboard required songs to be released as commercial singles in order to chart on the Hot 100, hindering the song's charting ability until the rules were eventually changed. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” climbed to the top spot on the chart dated December 21, 2019, bringing Mariah's total of number-one singles to nineteen. As of 2024, the song has has spent a total of twelve non-consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100 chart. “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” which achieved Diamond status by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2021, was certified 12x Platinum in 2022.

The song became Mariah's best-selling single in Japan, where it was certified Million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan in 1995, denoting sales of over 1 million copies, and has topped the charts in over twenty-five countries including Australia and the United Kingdom. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has also spent thirteen weeks atop Billboard's Global 200 chart — which ranks the top songs globally based on digital sales and online streaming — making it the longest running number-one song by a female artist.

Merry Christmas also contains covers of seven Christmas classics: “Silent Night,” “O Holy Night,” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” “Joy To The World,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” “Hark The Herald Angels Sing,” and “Jesus, Oh What A Wonderful Child.” “It was kind of hard to choose which classic songs to record. So many songs have been done to death. You have to have a nice balance between classic standard Christmas hymns and fun songs.”

On the album, apart from collaborating with songwriting partner Walter Afanasieff, Mariah teamed up with Loris Holland. “He co-arranged and co-produced some of the songs, and that added a really great authentic gospel flavor to a lot of the stuff,” she explained. “We cut [Jesus, Oh What A Wonderful Child] live and had the guys that play it in church and the girls singing it. It wasn't like a traditional recording session. I had all my backup singers and their husbands and their babies playing tambourines, so we got to experience some real authentic church flavor.”

All I Want For Christmas Is You

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true…
All I want for Christmas
Is you…

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you…
You baby

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
You…

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need — won't you please bring my baby to me…

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see my baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is
You…
All I want for Christmas is you baby

O Holy Night

O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angels' voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night
O night divine

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angels' voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine
O night divine

O night divine (Ooh yes it was)
O night divine (It is the night of our dear Savior's birth)
O night divine (Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah)
O night divine (It was a holy, holy, holy, oh)
O night divine (Oh… yes it was)

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

Christmas (The snow's coming down)
Christmas (I'm watching it fall)
Christmas (Lots of people around)
Christmas (Baby please come home)

Christmas (The church bells in town)
Christmas (All ringing in song)
Christmas (Full of happy sounds)
Christmas (Baby please come home)

They're singing “Deck The Halls”
But it's not like Christmas at all
Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

Christmas (Pretty lights on the tree)
Christmas (I'm watching them shine)
Christmas (You should be here with me)
Christmas (Baby please come home)

They're singing “Deck The Halls”
But it's not like Christmas at all
Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

Christmas (If there was a way)
Christmas (I'd hold back this tear)
Christmas (But it's Christmas day)
Please (Please)
Please (Please)
Please (Please)
Please (Please)
Please (Baby please come home)
Please
Christmas (Baby please come home)
Christmas (Baby please come home)
Christmas (Baby please come home)

Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)

The fire is burning, the room's all aglow
Outside the December wind blows
Away in the distance the carolers sing in the snow
Everybody's laughing
The world is celebrating
And everyone's so happy
Except for me tonight

Because I miss you
Most at Christmas time
And I can't get you
Get you off my mind
Every other season comes along and I'm all right
But then I miss you
Most at Christmas time

I gaze out the window, this cold winter's night
At all of the twinkling lights
Alone in the darkness remembering when you were mine
Everybody's smiling
The whole world is rejoicing
And everyone's embracing
Except for you and I

Baby I miss you
Most at Christmas time
And I can't get you, no no no no
Get you off my mind
Every other season comes along and I'm all right
But then I miss you
Most at Christmas time

In the springtime those memories start to fade
With the April rain
Through the summer days
Till Autumn's leaves are gone
I get by without you
Till the snow begins to fall

And then I miss you
Most at Christmas time
And I can't get you, no no no no
Get you off my mind
Every other season comes along and I'm all right
But then I miss you
Most at Christmas time

Joy To The World

Joy to the world
The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world
The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the earth
The Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the people everywhere you see
Joy to you and me

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the people everywhere you see
Joy to you and me

He rules the world
With truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders and wonders of His

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the people everywhere you see
Joy to you and me

Joy to the people everywhere you see
Joy to you and me

Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why

Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town

He's making a list
He's checking it twice
He's gonna find out
Who's naughty or nice

Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town

He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake

Oh you better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why

Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town

The kids in girl and boyland
Will have a jubilee
They're gonna build a toyland
All around the Christmas tree

So you better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why

Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' (Santa Claus)
Santa Claus is comin' (Santa Claus)

Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child

Jesus, Jesus
Oh what a wonderful child

So lowly meek and mild
New life, new hope, new joy He brings
Won't you listen to the angels sing
Glory, glory, glory
To the new born King

Jesus, Jesus
So lowly meek and mild
New life, new hope, new joy He brings
Won't you listen to the angels sing
Glory, glory, glory
To the new born King

He was herald by the angels
Born in a lowly manger
The virgin Mary was His mother
And Joseph was his earthly father
Three wise men came from afar
They were guided by a shining star
To see King Jesus where He lay
In a manger filled with hay

Jesus, Jesus
Oh what a wonderful child
Jesus, Jesus
So lowly meek and mild
Oh new joy He brings
Won't you listen to the angels sing
Glory
To the new born King

Oh Jesus
Jesus
Mary's baby
Lamb of God
Heavenly Child

I Love Him
