Mariah included a medley of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and “Gloria (In Excelsis Deo)” on her first Christmas album, Merry Christmas, released in 1994. “It was hard to choose which classic songs to record,” Mariah told Billboard magazine in 1994. “So many of the songs have been done to death. You have to have a nice balance between standard Christmas hymns and fun songs.” The song was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on December 8, 2023.
