Released on June 16, 2009, “Obsessed” was the lead single from Mariah's Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel album. “I'm very glad I wrote ‘Obsessed’ because it's one of my favorite songs,” Mariah said in 2009. “I won't say exactly what made me write it, but I guess if you think about it, I remember when I was growing up and a guy, a little boy, maybe like in sixth grade or in fifth grade, and they're constantly tripping you or pulling your hair or doing things like that and you just wonder, ‘What is wrong with them? What is their problem? Why do they keep talking about me? I don't understand this person. What is the problem?’ ”
“Obsessed” entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number eleven during the week of July 25, 2009, her highest debut on the chart since “My All” entered at number two in 1998. The song peaked at number seven on the Hot 100, becoming Mariah's twenty-seventh Top 10 single, and was certified 3x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on November 19, 2020.
Mariah enlisted Gucci Mane for the urban remix of the song. “Mariah knew I wanted to do a song with her,” the rapper told MTV News. “It finally happened, and it turned out hard. I just flew up there to New York, went in the studio with her. I flew right out and went back on the road. When I do a song with people, I like to really get in the studio with them so I could feel they swag and they could feel mine. The music comes out better.” The dance remixes, produced by Cahill, Seamus Haji & Paul Emanuel, Friscia & Lamboy, Cajjmere Wray and the Jump Smokers took “Obsessed” to the top of Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart on October 3, 2009.

The “Obsessed” music video was directed by Brett Ratner and filmed at New York City's Plaza Hotel. In it, Mariah plays a superstar who's being followed by a stalker — played by Mariah in drag. “When I was dressed as Mariah Carey, there were a lot of people just standing there taking pictures and the street was closed down,” she told MTV News. “I went into costume as the stalker and I told my bodyguard, ‘I don't want you to walk with me.’ I was outside and no one noticed me. It was fun for me to able to just be free.” The video, which premiered on July 15, 2009, also features a cameo appearance by world-renowned French fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier.
Mariah and Gucci Mane filmed additional footage for the remix version of the “Obsessed” music video, filmed at New York City's Plaza hotel in June 2009.
In the United States, the “Obsessed” single was released on CD and 12" vinyl, both including the Album Version and the Gucci Mane Remix. The CD, sold exclusively by retailer Walmart, also includes the “Obsessed” music video.
Internationally, “Obsessed” was released on CD including the Album Version and the Cahill Radio Edit remix of the song.
