“H.A.T.E.U.” was sent to radio as the third single from Mariah's Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel on November 1, 2009. “‘H.A.T.E.U.’ is the first song I wrote for the album, and it stands for Having A Typical Emotional Upset,” Mariah said in 2009. “I sing a recurring melody in the upper register of my voice; it's not an ad-lib, but an integral part of the song's hook. That's not something I've done before, and when listening back to it, it reminded me of how Minnie Riperton used her upper register on her hit song ‘Lovin' You.’ I thought how ironic that her song was called ‘Lovin' You’ and my song is called, ‘H.A.T.E.U.’ — and both use that upper whistle register as a major part of the melody. So it's sort of an homage to Minnie Riperton, a tribute to her since she has been so influential in my singing style.”

Remixes

Mariah recorded new vocals for the So So Def remix of the song, which samples Ghost Town's “My Boo” and features rappers OJ Da Juiceman, Big Boi and Gucci Mane. “That was a blessing. I was like, ‘Are you serious? Who?!’ ” OJ Da Juiceman explained about being asked to collaborate on the remix. “I hurried up and did it. Knocked that guy out in 10 minutes. It surprised me.” Producers Chew Fu, Jason Nevins and Benny Benassi were in charge of the song's dance remixes, which were never released with the exception of the Jason Nevins “Loves U” remix, which was included on the Just Dance 3 soundtrack compilation, released in June 2010.

The music video for “H.A.T.E.U.” was directed by Brett Ratner and filmed in Malibu, California in early November 2009. The video premiered on VEVO a month later, on December 8, 2009.
