On December 8, 1994, Mariah gave a concert at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in Harlem, New York, which helped raise $700,000 to support the Fresh Air Fund. Fund officials said that her pledge was the largest the charity had received in at least 30 years, and perhaps in its 117-year history. In return, the name of a camp in Fishkill, NY, previously known as the Career Awareness Camp, was changed to Camp Mariah.
“I really wanted to do something with kids for charity because I think you can really make a difference in someone's life when you're dealing with children,” Mariah explained. “[The Fresh Air Fund] said they needed someone to stand behind the camp and raise money for it. They take kids out of the inner cities who don't have the money to go to camp and who may have never been in the country in their lives. I really want to be involved with it, not just putting my name behind it.”
Mariah performed six song from her Merry Christmas album — including her first-ever live performance of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” — and closed the show with her number-one hit “Hero.” The live performance of “Joy To The World” was used as the song's music video, but the whole concert didn't see the light of day until 2019, when it was included on the Deluxe Anniversary Edition of Merry Christmas and became available for a limited time on YouTube. The performance of “Hero” was released as a bonus track on a special edition “All I Want For Christmas Is You” CD single.
