The 15th annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service took place on May 15, 1996, on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. and was broadcasted on C-SPAN. Mariah performed her song “Hero” to honor 174 members of law enforcement who had died the previous year. “It's important to acknowledge the people who have lost their lives in the line of duty to protect all of us,” Mariah said.
