Mariah was the presenter for the Best Group Video award at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, which were held on September 4, 1996 at New York City's Radio City Music Hall. The award went to the Foo Fighters, for their song “Big Me.”

When Ben Stiller announced “one of the best singers in the world” during the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, Whitney Houston appeared onstage. Midway through her entrance, Mariah's “Honey” started playing and Mariah — wearing an identical Vera Wang dress — appeared from the other side of the stage. After realizing they were both wearing the same “one-of-a-kind” dress, they removed a layer of fabric to reveal two very different asymmetrical dresses. They continued to present the award for Best Male Video, which went to “Just The Two Of Us,” by Will Smith.
The 2005 MTV Video Music Awards took place on August 28 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. Mariah, however, performed live from the National Hotel in Miami's South Beach.
