“After Tonight” is a song Mariah wrote with Diane Warren and David Foster that appeared on her Rainbow album, released in 1999. “We have our own different styles,” Mariah said about working with Diane Warren. “Her thing is sometimes the exact opposite of what I do and I'm forced into a position of having to say, ‘No, Diane, I hate that stuff, it's just not me!’ She gets really obsessive over her music and her lyrics and again, from time to time I'll be forced to tell her, ‘No, Diane, we just said that word two lines ago, we can't use it again.’ However, Diane and I have a good relationship so I can be completely honest with her. She's very cool, funny, talented and unique.”
The song was intended to be recorded as a duet with Mariah's boyfriend at the time, Latin singer Luis Miguel. “Luis didn't like the end result,” David Foster told the New York Daily News. “The song was written just for Mariah. I had Luis and Mariah record it several different times, but it never sounded right. So she ended up doing it by herself.”
I look at you looking at me
Feels like a feeling meant to be
And as your body moves with mine
It's like I'm lifted out of time
And time again
Patiently I've waited
For this moment to arrive
After tonight
Will you remember
How sweet and tenderly
You reached for me
And pulled me closer
After you go
Will you return to love me
After tonight begins to fade
I feel your touch caressing me
This feeling's all I'll ever need
With every kiss from your sweet lips
It's like I'm drifting out of time
Alone will tell
If you feel the way I feel
When I look in your eyes
After tonight
Will you remember
How sweet and tenderly
You reached for me
And pulled me closer
After you go
Will you return to love me
After the night becomes the day
Time
And time and time again
So patiently I've waited
For this moment to arrive
After tonight
Will you remember
How sweet and tenderly
You reached for me
And pulled me closer
After you go
Baby will you return to love me
After the night becomes the day
After tonight begins to fade
