“The One” is a Mariah Carey x Jermaine Dupri collaboration from Mariah's 2002 Charmbracelet album. The song was sent to radio as the album's second single, before “Boy (I Need You)” was chosen in its place. “Jermaine Dupri and I got back in the studio and we came up with a bunch of different ideas. Basically the concept was being apprehensive about getting into a relationship with somebody even though you think this person could be the right one to make that move with,” Mariah said about the song. “I like the vibe of the record because it's an R&B record, but it's also got a slight Hip-Hop-ish undertone. I like hook a lot and the way we decided to flip the verses — lyrically and melodically.”
Mariah recorded new vocals for the So So Def Remix of “The One,” which features Bone Crusher and was included on the 2003 compilation The Remixes. Richard Morel and Wildlife produced dance remixes of the song, which became available in January 2021, when a digital “The One” EP became available on streaming platforms. Additional remixes by Joey Negro, Joe Bermudez and Johnny Rocks were never released.
