“Forever” is a song from Mariah's Daydream album that was released as a radio-only single in the United States and as a commercial single in Europe and Australia. “‘Forever’ was kind of inspired by old '50s/'60s ballads that are just kind of really big performance style ballads,” Mariah said about the song. “It's got a very romantic feeling and I think it's kind of nostalgic too because it does remind you of like an old record in a lot of ways.”
In the United States, “Forever” impacted radio on June 18, 1996, peaking at number nine on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and at number two on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song got a limited release in Europe and Australia in late October 1996, peaking at number forty-seven on the Dutch charts.
The music video for “Forever” was directed by Larry Jordan and features footage from Mariah's visit and performance in Japan during her 1996 Daydream Tour.
The “Forever” CD single released in Europe contains both the album version of the song and Mariah's performance at the Tokyo Dome during the Daydream Tour. The Maxi Single includes two additional remixes of “Always Be My Baby”: the Always Club Mix and the ST Dub. “Forever” was also released on vinyl, including the album version, the live version at the Tokyo Dome and the Dub-A-Baby remix of “Always Be My Baby.”
The Australian “Forever” Maxi Single, released on CD and cassette, includes the Album Version of “Forever” and “Underneath The Stars,” as well as the live versions of “Forever” from Mariah's Daydream tour in Tokyo and “Make It Happen” from Fantasy: Mariah Carey at Madison Square Garden.
