Originally recorded by Def Leppard, Mariah's cover of “Bringin' On The Heartbreak” was included on her Charmbracelet album and released as an airplay-only single in the United States on June 2, 2003. “I love going from showing my Minnie Riperton influences to hip-hop to rock. It's all me,” Mariah told Billboard in 2002. “For ‘Heartbreak,’ it was fun to go back to a song that I loved singing when I was in school. I think we bring some fresh elements to it.”
Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen told the Montreal Gazette: “Someone's actually out there promoting one of our songs. Ultimately, it's just a great honor for us if anyone does that — and does a real genuine version. With Mariah it was a genuine version of our song. I actually think that's a huge compliment.”
“Bringin' On The Heartbreak” was remixed by Junior Vasquez, Mike Rizzo and Ruanne Emmenes, among others, peaking at number five on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

The video for “Bringin' On The Heartbreak” was directed by Sanaa Hamri and filmed at the Los Angeles Olympic Auditorium in March 2003. It was inspired by the 1979 Bette Middler film The Rose and featured appearances by Dave Navarro, Randy Jackson and model Damon Willis, who played Mariah's love interest. The video made its debut on VH1 on July 14, 2003.
“Bringin' On The Heartbreak” got a very limited release in Europe on October 6, 2003. The CD Single contains the previously-unreleased track “Miss You,” while the Enhanced CD Maxi Single also includes the Live Version of the song and the music video.
