On April 11, 2019, dick clark productions and NBC announced Mariah Carey as the recipient of the prestigious Billboard Icon Award, joining previous legendary Icon recipients Stevie Wonder, Prince, Janet Jackson, Neil Diamond and more. During the awards ceremony, which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 1, Mariah also took the stage to perform a medley of her biggest hits.
“Thank you Billboard for letting me grow up on the charts with you and for this incredible honor,” Mariah said while accepting the award. “Icon? I really don't think of myself in that way. I just wanted to create something so I could feel worthy of existing. And if I've learned anything — anything at all in this life — it's that truly all things are possible with God.”
