Underneath The Stars

“Underneath The Stars” is a song Mariah wrote with Walter Afanasieff for her Daydream album, released in 1995, that was sent to radio in late 1996. “I think that we stretched a little bit on this album as far as stylistically what you would expect the Walter A./Mariah sound to be,” Mariah told Molly Meldrum in 1995. “Like on songs like ‘Underneath The Stars,’ a lot of people ask me, ‘Who did you do that with?’ because it doesn't really sound like some of our previous things. It was like, ‘Let's try this, let's experiment with sounds, let's use a scratch record, let's use an old Rhodes sound.’ It was doing things to kind of create a vibe as opposed to the there's the typical thing that we do.”

The Drifting Re-mix of “Underneath The Stars,” produced by Poke & Tone, features new vocals and samples Smif-N-Wessun's classic track “Sound Bwoy Burreill.” A Sweet A Cappella version of the song was released on streaming platforms on August 14, 2020, on a digital “Underneath The Stars” EP.

Music Video

Mariah first referenced the music video for “Underneath The Stars” in 2012, when she tweeted “Little known fact, I actually shot a video for ‘Underneath The Stars’ in France and England that never got released and I don't know where it is!” Eight years later, the clip was found and premiered on YouTube in November 2020. The clip also features footage from the European leg of Mariah's Daydream tour.
