Chicago radio station B96 premiered “Touch My Body,” the lead single from Mariah's E=MC² album, on February 12, 2008. “Tricky and The-Dream were in the studio and Dream started to sing all these things like ‘with the camera up in here’ and all that stuff but he was talking about it from a guy's perspective and I was like, ‘Wait a minute. No, I have to turn this around,” Mariah explained. “I finished writing the record with a friend of mine, Cristyle Johnson, and we were coming from a girl's point of view and I was like, ‘Let me flip this a little and say, the camera's gonna leave with me when I do. And if you run your mouth and brag about this secret rendezvous, I will hunt you down’.”
“Touch My Body” was officially released on March 24, 2008, and became Mariah's eighteenth number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making her the solo artist with the most number-one songs in US history — surpassing the record previously held by Elvis Presley. “I really can never put myself in the category of people who have not only revolutionized music but also changed the world,” Mariah told The Associated Press. “That's a completely different era and time. I'm just feeling really happy and grateful.” “Touch My Body” spent two weeks atop the Hot 100 chart and was certified 3x Multi-Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on September 26, 2022.
In the United Kingdom, “Touch My Body” peaked at number five on the Official Singles Chart, Mariah's highest position since “We Belong Together” peaked at number two in 2005. It became Mariah's twenty-fourth Top 10 single in the country and was certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry on December 28, 2018.

The “Touch My Body” remix, featuring Rick Ross and The-Dream, became available on March 28, 2008. “Whenever an artist of Mariah's caliber is involved you gotta bring your A game,” Rick Ross explained. “‘Touch My Body’ is a big record and I just had to add that street flavor, that Maybach music.” The dance remixes, produced by Craig C., Seamus Haji & Paul Emmanuel and Subkulcha, took the song to the top of Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart during the week of May 10, 2008.

The music video for “Touch My Body” was directed by Brett Ratner and filmed at Shawn Sedaghat's house in Beverly Hills, California. The video, which premiered on February 27, 2008, features an appearance by actor Jack McBrayer playing a computer technician who falls in love with Mariah at first sight. “[Brett Ratner] had some time because of the writers' strike, and he was really feeling the record,” Mariah told MTV. “The idea of Jack McBrayer came up, and I was like, ‘That's amazing!’ Because he is hilarious. Why take this so seriously? They're videos.”
