Say Somethin'

“Say Somethin'” is a collaboration with Snoop Dogg from Mariah's 2005 album The Emancipation Of Mimi. The song, produced by The Neptunes, was originally chosen to be the lead single from the album and was intended for a November 2004 release. However, after the song leaked on the internet and Mariah continued working on new songs with Jermaine Dupri, “It's Like That” was chosen instead. “They wanted to actually go with ‘Say Somethin'’ as the lead single. They were like, ‘I love it, I love it. It's so different for you. You should go with it.’ ” Mariah told Billboard. “I felt like it was a really strong album cut, but I didn't see it as the first single for me, because I thought it was too different. I think we really made the right choice artistically to work [with Pharrell]. It was such a perfect time in my life and my career for that.”

“I had never worked with Pharrell before, but it was just a really cool experience because musically, he's got a lot of diverse influences and it was cool that he took me to a different place than I would naturally go,” Mariah told AOL. “It was just a great session, because Snoop was in the other room working on his record. And Pharrell was like, ‘I really think it'd be hot if we put Snoop on this.’ And I love Snoop, we've worked together in the past, we did a song called ‘Crybaby’ that's one of my favorite songs. And he came in and he did his part, and it just took the song to a new level.”

In the United States, “Say Somethin'” was released as the fifth single from The Emancipation Of Mimi on April 3, 2006. The song spent five weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it peaked at number seventy-nine. “Say Somethin'” peaked at number twenty-seven on the UK's Official Singles Chart and at number twenty-six on Australia's ARIA charts.

Music Video

Director Paul Hunter was in charge of the “Say Somethin'” music video, which was filmed between Paris and Los Angeles. In the video, Mariah frolics in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower with Pharrell Williams — all while clad in the ultraluxe designs of famed French fashion house Louis Vuitton. “You know what was so great about being in Paris? Usually I'm inside a hotel room and I don't get to see anything,” Mariah told MTV. “This time, I finally got to drive around the city, walk around the city and hang out. I love Paris; I love the electricity this city has. And it gave me a new perspective on this song, which is one of the first songs I recorded for The Emancipation of Mimi. It's got a hot vibe to it, when you're driving around in the car on a normal, rainy day in Paris, driving around in circles in a Maserati — who doesn't do that every day?”

Lyrics

Say Somethin'

I am over here
Looking at you
You are over there
Watching me too
Both painting pictures of
Of how we'll kiss and ****!
So what we gon' do
(so what you gon' do, what you gon' do)
Tell me why we're standing here
The moment's fresh and so sincere
You got my mind blown
And baby, I'm ready to go

But uh…
If it's worth your while
Say something, say something
If it's worth your while
Say something good to me
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
If it's worth your while
Do something good to me

(let's make it)
Hot as you can stand it
Something like volcanic
You and me seems organic
Just like the stars and planets
Yeah, we are
So what you gon' do
(so what you gon' do, what you gon' do)
Tell me why we're still in here
There's nothing for us to fear
I can tell it with my eyes closed
And baby, I'm ready to go

But uh…
If it's worth your while
Say something, say something
If it's worth your while
Say something good to me
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
If it's worth your while
Do something good to me
If it's worth your while
Say something, say something
If it's worth your while
Say something good to me baby
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
If it's worth your while
Do something good to me

Snoop Dogg:
Every time I fall though
Want me to speak on a word or two
It's the D O double G
And I do it, so lovely
Diggin' this track by The Neptunes
Babygirl, follow me to the rest room
Now get buck wild
Shh… don't make a sound
I'll take you, lay you down
Make your body go round and round
Do you want to?
Don't say you won't
I know you do
Most girls play shy
It won't hurt until you give it a try
I know you like my smile
Dig my style
Big bow wow

But uh…
If it's worth your while
Say something, say something
If it's worth your while
Say something good to me
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
If it's worth your while
Do something good to me
If it's worth your while
Say something, say something
If it's worth your while
Say something good to me
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
If it's worth your while
Do something good to me
