“It's Like That” made its radio debut on Chicago's B96 on January 3, 2005, as the first single from Mariah's 10th studio album, The Emancipation Of Mimi. “‘It's Like That’ is a song that to me is just very much about having a good time, and really just a fun, party record,” Mariah told AOL. “I went to Atlanta and I was working with Jermaine Dupri. I just wanted a record that was really fun, really like for the clubs and just for the people who were getting ready to go out at night; one of those really ‘Let your hair down, just have a good time, this is my night’ type of thing. This is my song when I go out to have a good time. And that's how we came up with the song, we were just having fun.”
In the United States, “It's Like That” made its debut at number fifty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the week of January 29, 2005. It peaked at number sixteen, becoming Mariah's twenty-fifth Top 20 single and her most successful chart entry since her collaboration with Busta Rhymes and The Flipmode Squad on 2003's “I Know What You Want.” The song was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on June 6, 2005.
Following its commercial release in the United Kingdom on March 28, 2005, “It's Like That” entered the Official Singles Chart at number four, becoming Mariah's twenty-first Top 10 entry. It was certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) on May 14, 2021. In Australia, the song made its debut at number nine during the week of April 10, 2005.
Mariah teamed up with David Morales and recorded new vocals for the dance remixes of “It's Like That,” which topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart on May 21, 2005. Scott Storch was in charge of the urban remix of the song, which features rapper Fat Joe.

The music video for “It's Like That” was directed by Brett Ratner and filmed in February 2005 at the Greystone Park and Mansion in Beverly Hills, California. The video, which premiered on MTV's Making The Video on March 4, shows Mariah at a pre-wedding party thrown by her controlling fiancée, played by actor Eric Roberts. Towards the end of the video, actor Wentworth Miller crashes the party. The storyline would be continued on the music video for “We Belong Together.”
“It's Like That” got three Vinyl releases in the United States. The first one, released on February 15, 2005, includes the Main, Club and Instrumental versions of the song. Two additional Vinyl releases became available on April 26, 2005. The first one, “It's Like That — Remixes by David Morales” includes two remixes: David Morales Club Mix and Stereo Experience. The second vinyl, “It's Like That — Remix by Scott Storch,” includes the Main and Instrumental versions of both “It's Like That” and the Scott Storch Remix, featuring Fat Joe.
In Europe, “It's Like That” was released on March 21, 2005. The CD Single includes the Main Version and the David Morales Radio Mix, while the CD Maxi Single, which includes a bonus double-sided poster, contains five versions of the song: Main, No Rap, David Morales Club Mix, David Morales Classic Mix and Stereo Experience.
France got two exclusive Limited Edition releases for “It's Like That,” becoming available on April 25, 2005. The first one was an enhanced CD including the previously-unreleased “Sprung” and the “It's Like That” music video. A Collector's Edition CD contains the David Morales Remix of “It's Like That,” two songs from Mariah's Charmbracelet album (“Through The Rain” and “The One”), the Maurice Joshua Remix of “Through The Rain” and the “It's Like That” music video.
